about

The song “Dharma Man” advances the composer Eden Ahbez’s mythical aspect. It also refers to the composer's breakout moment following the success of “Nature Boy” in 1948 when Life, Newsweek, and Time magazines all published feature articles about him. Yet it is his notion that “You never get the dharma going to school” that, while not exactly “We don't need no education,” harkens back to an idea that the path to enlightenment comes not through the intellect, but rather through one's struggle from disillusionment to hard-won wisdom. The song also commemorates the orchard filled stretch of terrain running from Central to Southern California known as the San Joaquin Highway. The word dharma in Hindu tradition connotes the divine law or moral code which governs all life. In Buddhism it is one's life path. It entered the popular imagination in the West via Beat Generation author Jack Kerouac's 1958 novel The Dharma Bums (to which the title “Dharmaland” is likely a nod).
